Highlights of CQG Print

The article Tidal acceleration of black holes and superradiance by Cardoso and Pani was selected by the Editorial Board of Classical and Quantum Gravity (CQG) to be one of the journal’s Highlights of 2012-2013.

The Highlights will be promoted as a representation of some of the most interesting and high quality work in gravitational physics.

In this article, Vitor Cardoso and Paolo Pani demonstrate that it possible to establish a broader correspondence between tidal acceleration and superradiance by rotating black holes. This correspondence allows the interpretation and prediction of some aspects of black hole dynamics in general relativity. In addition, it also allows the use of the membrane paradigm, which regards the event horizon as an elastic membrane, and enables a direct interpretation in light of Newtonian mechanics. These results have important implications for astrophysics, particularly for the analysis of gravitational and electromagnetic waves. For details, read the original article
